The Department of Genetics is growing and changing with many new graduate students and postdoctoral fellows joining the department, as well as many graduate students and postdocs finishing their education/training and moving on to the next level. We would like to welcome the newcomers and acknowledge some of the accomplishments this past year.
   
 
 

 

Welcome to the newest members of the Genetics Department:

Curriculum in Genetics & Molecular Biology Graduate Student, Kyle Gaulton, recently joined Karen Mohlke's lab. Kyle is also in the Bioinformatics Computational Biology Training Program.

Angelika Jährig recently rejoined Debbie Threadgill’s lab after completing her M.S. in Bingen, Germany to help develop a bacterial facility for gastrointestinal microflora and pathogens.

Curriculum in Genetics & Molecular Biology Graduate Student, Amanda Nave, recently joined Karen Mohlke’s lab.

Trudy Oliver, Ph.D. from Duke University recently joined Terry Van Dyke’s lab as a Postdoctoral Fellow.  Elyse Lee, Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin recently joined David Threadgill’s Lab as a SPIRE Postdoctoral Fellow.

Congratulations to Genetics Department members recently awarded honors and prizes:

Michele LaMerrill
(graduate student, Curriculum in Toxicology, David Threadgill’s Lab) was awarded a pre-doctoral fellowship from the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program for a project titled "Environmental and genetic influences on breast cancer susceptibility".

Erica Rinella (graduate student, Genetics and Molecular Biology Curriculum, David Threadgill’s Lab) was awarded a pre-doctoral fellowship from the NIH National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine for a project titled 'Effects of CAMs on EGFR-Targeted Therapy'.
   
   
 
 

 

Congratulations to former Genetics Department members:

Deloris Alexander (Postdoctoral Fellow, David Threadgill’s Lab) has taken an Assistant Professor position at Tuskegee University.

Jason Andrus (Debbie Threadgill’s lab) completed a SPIRE postdoctoral fellowship and accepted an Assistant Professor position at Augusta State University.

Anika Bissahoyo (David Threadgill’s Lab) graduated in December with a PhD in the Curriculum in Toxicology and is currently a Program Analyst for undergraduate research at Brown University.

Reginald Hill (Terry Van Dyke’s Lab) graduated with a PhD from the Curriculum of Genetics and Molecular Biology in May 2005 and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at UCLA (Hong Wu).

Daekee Lee
(Research Associate, David Threadgill’s Lab) has taken an Assistant Professor position at Ewha Women’s University, Seoul, Korea

Julie McLear (Terry Van Dyke’s Lab)  graduated with a PhD from the Curriculum in Neurobiology in May 2005 and is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at SUNY-Albany (Anne Messer).
