Here is a summary of events just completed or happening in the next few months in the Dept. of Genetics. There will be more news in August/September.

Congratulations to Genetics Department members recently awarded honors and prizes:

Delia Barrick
(graduate student, Curriculum in Toxicology, David Threadgill’s lab) received a travel award to the FASEB Experimental Biology Meeting April 1-5 in San Francisco, Ca. Delia gave an invited oral presentation as well as a poster. Delia’s poster was also selected for emphasis during an extra oral presentation in the Graduate Student Posters in Pathology section of the meeting.

Michelle La Merrill (graduate student, Curriculum in Toxicology, David Threadgill’s lab) has two upcoming meeting presentations for which she received travel awards. She will be presenting both a poster and oral presentation at the Current and Future Challenges in Environmental Health, Toxicology, and Food Safety in Eastern and Central Europe" meeting held May 3-5 in Kiev, Ukraine. She will also be presenting at the Gordon Conference entitled “Environmental Endocrine Disruptors”, June 4-9, 2006 in Barga, Italy.

Jenna Passman (graduate student, Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology, Mark Majesky's lab) was awarded an abstract-driven travel award to present her research at the XIVth International Vascular Biology Meeting in The Netherlands, June 6-10, 2006.

Congratulations also to the following undergraduate members of Genetics labs.

Kristin Ellis (graduating senior in Biology) recently obtained Honors in Biology based on her work in Debbie Threadgill’s lab. Ian Carroll (post doc in Debbie’s lab) was Kristin’s primary research mentor.

Bittu Kuruvilla (graduating senior in Chemistry) recently obtained Honors in Chemistry based on her work in David Threadgill’s lab. Michelle La Merrill (Curriculum in Toxicology graduate student in David’s lab) was Bittu’s primary research mentor.

Katie Hanlon (graduating senior in Biology) is completing her time (two ½ years) in David Threadgill’s lab. Katie has contributed substantially to the Threadgill lab research endeavors and is a co-author on one published paper with two others in preparation. Anika Bissahoyo (Curriculum in Toxicology PhD graduate 2005) was Katie’s primary research mentor.
